La Playuela NOT Playa Sucia

by Darysabel Pérez Martínez
(San Juan PR)

Camping for weeks at "El Faro" (La Playuela and Bahía Sucia) back when I was 5 to 10 years old. Mostly old retired family members and children, since my parents, and most of my uncles and aunts had to work over the summer. I clearly remember my grandfather correcting me when I once referred to La Playuela as Playa Sucia. A common mistake, I think, due to the fact that the surf is relatively strong at La Playuela and it carries lots of algae into the shore, combined with the fact that the bay to the east of La Playuela is named Bahía Sucia (check any USGS map, you'll see). Unfortunately nowadays most people, even locals (including the creator of this site), seem to have forgotten that the real name of this beach its La Playuela, and not Playa Sucia. I wish they get this fact straight, someday soon.

Hi.
Nothing personal, but...
My grandfather, grandmother and several other relatives were born and raised in that sector (el Faro / Combate area) and they, and every one of their living relatives and neighbors, always referred to it (and still refer to it) as "Playa Sucia". You are correct about ?Bahia Sucia?; that has always been the name people used (and still use) to refer to it.
I'm now 50 yrs old, and they died over 25 years ago at the age of 82 and 77, so that?s over 100 years of relatives and friends referring to it as ?Playa Sucia?.
Sorry, but just because one person decides it?s named one thing, doesn?t mean several others are wrong (or vice versa); majority always rule?
Conduct a survey; make sure it is in Spanish!
